Clarke keeps up family tradition in Ballina

Independent Ballina councillor Peter Clarke followed in the footsteps of his late father and grandfather when he took the mayor’s chain in Ballina Town Council on Wednesday night. Clarke who was first elected in 2004 took over the stewardship of the council from outgoing mayor Frances McAndrew after he was nominated unopposed for the position for the coming year.

Questions raised by Kelly over funding to Ballina Chamber

Independent Ballina town councillor Mary Kelly raised a number of questions over the allocation of €20,000 worth of funding from the council’s coffers towards Ballina Chamber of Commerce for 2011. Cllr Kelly asked what the council would get for the large allocation of funding towards the Chamber and what influence the council would have on where the money was being spent.

Traffic plan reversal causes gridlock in chamber

The members of Ballina Town Council will have an item on the July agenda of the local authority to discuss the reversal of the traffic management plan in the town. The issue arose after Cllr Johnny O’Malley questioned how much money had been spent on the implementation of the second phase of the traffic plan when the members were considering the financial update on the councils spending up to the end of March this year.

Ballina town councillors gave out €9,500 in funding to local groups and individuals this week as part of their contributions to other bodies’ budgets. Ballina councillors to get progress report on estates

The elected members of Ballina Town Council are to get an up to date progress report on the situation regarding the take over of estates in the town following a motion proposed by Fine Gael councillor Michelle Mulherin this week. Cllr Mulherin told the meeting there are a number of estates in the town that have a variety of issues to be sorted out before the council will take them in charge, and that the members do not know what these issues are. She said that it gets frustrating when residents come to councillors for advice and to see how things are progressing. “We need a baseline to work from, so we can ascertain where these estates stand at the present,” she said.

The new tank was proposed by Fianna Fáil councillor Johnny O’Malley and seconded by Fine Gael councillor Barry McLoughlin following a debate on the potential hazards of effluent getting into the Moy.
